Five ingredients to avoid in skincare!


Our skin is the largest external organ of the human body, therefore, the things we apply to take care of it means a lot. Applying the right kind of skincare products can help to improve our overall complexion, giving it a clear and healthy glow. On the other hand, it can also cause an allergic reaction due to the ingredients present in it. It is important that one takes caution of what is applied onto the skin.


1. Parabens

Parabens are commonly used as a preservative in cosmetic products and can come under various aliases such as methylparabens, butylparabens, ethylparabens and propylparabens. It stops the growth of bacteria and mould, resulting in longer product shelf life. However, parabens contain estrogen-like properties that might increase the risk of breast cancer.

Present in: facial cleanser, body lotion, shampoo and foundation


2. Fragrances

The scent of any skincare or beauty products tend to be trade secrets, hence, it is usually not specified in the ingredients list. This means that the product could contain harmful chemicals that might trigger potential health problems.

Present in: facial moisturisers, hand cream 


3. Phthalates

Phthalates consists of a group of chemicals that increases the flexibility of plastics in skincare or beauty products. This helps the product to better adhere to our skin. Phthalates can cause endocrine disruptions and birth defects.

Present in: Fragrances, lotion, deodorant


4. Toluene

Toluene is a chemical substance that is derived from petroleum or coal sources. It can cause nausea, irritate the respiratory system and even cause foetal damage. Expecting mothers should avoid exposure to Toluene as it might cause developmental issues for the foetus.

Present in: Nail polish, hair colour products 


5. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

SLS and SLES are widely used surfactants and are added to increase foaming action. Products containing SLS or SLES may irritate the skin, lungs and the eyes. It might also lead to other health problems as it could combine with other chemicals to form a carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substance known as nitrosamines.

Present in: Shampoo, body soap and toothpaste
