5 simple DIY masks using honey
The secret to great skin is to maintain a consistent skincare routine. A great way is to start by preparing your own preservative-free face mask! Honey is a fantastic natural moisturizer which boasts of antiseptic and antibacterial properties which can repair all skin types and promote healing.
ACNE – Apple Cider Vinegar Mask.
Acne can be pesky and seem to take ages to clear. A regular scrub is necessary to remove dirt, keeping the layer of skin fresh and clean. Not only is apple cider a good rinse-in agent for shinier and healthy hair, it also doubles up as an exfoliator for troubled skin by killing bacteria, removing excess oil and returning the correct acidity to our skin.
Ingredients: Apple cider vinegar, green tea, honey, sugar
Directions: Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, 2 teaspoons of cooled green tea, 5 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of honey into a bowl. Stir the mixture well. For a thicker consistency, add more sugar. Spread the mask on your face using a cotton pad and massage it for a few minutes to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation.
The sugar in this recipe works as a natural exfoliant elpful in breaking up scar tissue and unclogging skin pores. Leave the mask on for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off with water. Repeat once or twice a week.
OILY – Egg Clay Mask
While oily skin protects and fights signs of aging, many people suffer from an excess of facial oil. This can lead to flare ups and congested pores. Egg white works on battling oily skin because it contains a natural astringent which helps to shrink pores and tightens skin with causing any irritation.
Ingredients: 1 egg white, 1 teaspoon honey, ground oats/ flour
Directions: Whip together the egg white and honey until well combined and a bit frothy. Add ground oats or flour until you have a paste. Apply to face (avoiding the eyes) and massage the paste gently into skin. Leave mask on for 10 minutes and remove with warm water. This mask will leave your skin glowing and firm. Repeat once a week.
WRINKLES + AGING – Vitamin Bomb Mask
Fine lines and wrinkles surface when the skin loses its elasticity due to aging. Fruits contain vitamins that naturally treat wrinkles, skin tone and texture. Apricots contain nourishing Vitamin A, B and C which heals damaged skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles while bananas acts as a moisturizer with Vit B6 to improve elasticity.
Ingredients: ½ of a Banana, 1 Apricot, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1tablespoon of lukewarm water
Directions: Mix the two fruits with lukewarm water and honey in a blender until there’s a creamy, fluffy texture. Apply the mask to your face, and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Repeat twice a week.
COMBINATION – Sweet and Sour Mask
Spilt personality might arise in skin conditions. A mixture of dry and oily skin in different areas can make it trickier because there is no one-size-fits-solution. However, when properly controlled, your skin can improve gradually with the dry areas softened and smoothed, and oily areas less red. Lemon brightens dull skin and tightens skin surface, hence shrinking the appearance of pores.
Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
Directions: Mix both honey + lemon together and apply it evenly over your face. Allow the mixture to dry for 10 minutes before rinsing. In case of inflammation, wash quickly and slather aloe vera gel. Repeat once a week.
DRY – Avocado Honey Refresher Mask
No one wants dry, scaly and irritated skin so it is important to moisturize your face properly to lock in moisture and protect it from drying out. Avocados contain fatty acids and vitamin E which moisturizes the skin and has impressive anti-aging benefits.
Ingredients: ½ ripe avocado, 1 tablespoon of honey
Directions: Mix ingredients together and apply to your face. For combination skin, you may want to apply more on the drier areas of your face, leaving it on for around 15 minutes. For deeper penetration into your pores, warm the honey before mixing with the avocado.
